       Hi everyone! Sorry about being MIA for the past few weeks, but I have been working hard on new TpT products, applying for jobs (yes, I will tell you all about it!) and enjoying the sunshine we have had here in Rhode Island. I can't express to you how much I appreciate the heat after the winter we had this year! Yesterday was 70 degrees and today was 62! A-MEN! I am so looking forward to summer! Well, as I said I have been working on new TpT products and my newest one is there on the left. It is a new, fun multiplication game that I made up. The students love it! Here is what they have said about it...

“I love Ka-Pow! You never know who is going to win so it is exciting!”

       I am really excited that the students enjoyed it so much! I will be creating an addition and subtraction version this week, as well. Check back for the update on when it will be ready!

 

       Besides this game, I have been working non-stop (well pretty much anyways) on my new nonfiction product that will be ready in about a week! It has lots of fun nonfiction passages and activities to use with them. Being that the Common Core is so focused on nonfiction, I am happy I put the time and effort into this product. I know it will be useful and the students have loved the ones we used so far. It is targeted towards grades 2 and 3. I can't wait for you all to see it.

 

       As promised, I want to quickly tell you about my job that I am applying for. Ok, well a district by me is going to full day kindergarten so there are 4 openings! Yes, 4! I am so thrilled that it even came up on School Spring. The teaching jobs in RI are very hard to come by! Therefore, I am pretty much praying, crossing my fingers, and wishing as much as possible. Haha! I keep telling myself that whatever is meant to be will be so to not stress so much. Still, it is hard! I will keep you posted if I hear anything!

 

       Oh, and one last thing just for fun. Yesterday, one of the little girls came up to me and said she drew a picture of me. While I have gotten plenty of them and they are all uniquely special, this one was so well done! She got down to every little detail! I figured I share it! So, what do you think? Do you see the resemblance? Hehe! ;-)

Spring Has Sprung...FINALLY! FREEBIE!!!!!

       YES, FINALLY!!!! Spring is here! Rhode Island has been slammed with snow this year so I am so glad it is just about over (well, hopefully). Since I didn't substitute today, I figured why not make a new product! Being that it was beautiful today, I probably should have done something outside, but oh well! I am happy I completed a new product!

SPRING SALE & Common Core Math! 3D Shapes FUN!

     

     SPRING SALE IS HERE!!! Alright spring is right around the corner so let’s start it off right with a little spring cleaning.      Ok, and as I continue to ramble on, I would like to show you a few pics from math today. 3-D SHAPES! So, I have been subbing for this one teacher frequently so she lets me do a lesson of my own here and there. It is great! For today, we learned about 3-D shapes in a whole new way! They LOVED it!!! (Thankfully, this lesson was allowed because none of the students had allergies! Yay! ) Check out the pictures of our lesson today!

 

 

Here are two of the students working hard on using the food to count the faces, edges and vertices! They did so well! I mean, maybe the fact that they knew they could eat the food after was a huge incentive! ;-)

 

    

 

 

We used cheese balls to represent spheres, Hershey’s chocolate for rectangular prisms, Starburst for cubes, marshmallows for cylinders, and Bugles for cones.

 

     We also used this cute poem that I found on Pinterest. The students were a little curious why the soda was called “soda pop”. Being in RI, we don’t refer to soda as pop, but oh well! Overall, a great subbing day!

St. Patrick's Day FREEBIE! Common Core

It is FREEBIE time! This week has flown by! (As do all the weeks lately!) Either way, I decided to do a freebie for Freebie Friday and this is what I came up with. St. Patrick's Day Product is READY!!! COMMON CORE

St. Patrick’s Day is coming! It is already the middle of February, and as we all know, February just flies by! I figured I better get started on a new product for St. Paddy’s Day before I blink and March is here. So, today I finished up “St. Patrick’s Day Math Fun!” This St. Patrick's Day themed math game and center activity is perfect for your little kindergarteners. In the game your students must fill their pots (ten frames) with ten gold coins. Students take turns spinning the spinner and adding and subtracting gold coins from their pots. The winner is the first person to fill his/her pot with ten gold coins. (CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4)(CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.1) In the part-part-whole math center activity, students decompose numbers and record each decomposition by drawing or writing an equation on the recording sheet afterwards. (CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.3) You can feel confident that your students are not only working towards the standard, but having fun too! Click on the picture to find out more information!

Winter Storm Nemo, New TpT Product, & Valentine's Day SALE!!!

MY POWER IS BACK ON!!! I have been trapped in the house for two days with no electricity! Can you say blogging withdrawals!?! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate electricity now! Winter storm Nemo really wasn’t kidding. At first I was thinking it can’t be that bad, but once that snow started coming down I knew Rhode Island was not going to forget this one! We got 20” of snow! Yes, 20 inches! Not to mention the snow drifts that are about 3 feet high! Thank goodness my boyfriend was willing to do the shoveling because while I offered to help, both of us knew I would be more in the way than any help! So, I helped myself to some hot coca and took some pictures of all the snow! Here are some of the pictures!

Well, while I was stuck without electricity, I decided to catch up on some of the reading I told myself I would get to. I spent a lot of time reading some great Lucy Calkins books and a Richard Allington book I bought a few months back. I was able to get some great reading ideas and just have some peace and quiet......then ZING, the power! Books went away and I got back to my latest TpT resource! (I can’t help it, I am addicted!) So, after lots of hours playing catch up on all the time I couldn’t work on my product this weekend, my "Pirate Math Games & Center Fun" product is D-O-N-E! This new product is aligned with the COMMON CORE and is stacked with fun activities! I swear you will want to play these games too! So, here it is! Check it out below!

Bargain Shopping & Valentine's Day FREEBIE!!!

Hi bloggers! I have a few things to share with you tonight! First of all, I am SOOO excited about my newest bargains. As you know, I have started my new after school job and I just love it! I have been working with my students on sight word recognition in isolation and in context. Well, I figured that since this is an after school program and these students are already tired, I have to make this program as fun and engaging as possible. So, I went out to the Dollar Tree and did some digging around. I ended up finding these party platter dishes that I am using to represent the water. You are probably wondering why I didn’t just use a piece of blue construction paper; I didn’t use that because this platter is a great way to hold the fish and the cards. The center, normally used for a dipping sauce, comfortably holds the playing cards. As for the fish, I got those for .50 cents at Michael's. Yes, 36 Dr. Seuss fish for only .50 cents! Even though they are a little big for the party platter, they still work! And lastly, the fishing poles are just wooden dowels I had my dad cut up and sand the ends for me. I hot glued magnets to the fish and the ends of the poles and viola, new sight word game! All in all, the total cost $4! I can’t wait to try this game out with my students!

Also, on my Dollar Tree bargain hunt, I found these HUGE fly swatters! Yes, they are large! I probably should have placed an object next to them so you could see exactly how big they are. Roughly, the net portion is just about the size of a piece of paper. Now, these fly swatters will surely be a hit with my students. I will use them for the swatting sight word game I have planned for the next coming weeks. I can’t wait for the students to see these! I am not sure though, I might actually be more excited about the swatters than my students will be. I will definitely post some pictures when we play!

Valentine's Day Delivery - COMMON CORE ALIGNED

Valentine's Day is right around the corner! Just about a month away already! Therefore, I decided what better way to spend my Saturday than to make a new TpT product! (Some may think I am crazy for wanting to do this on my day off, but I love it!) In my new product called "Valentine's Day Delivery", I made a cute file folder game and a couple worksheets. The game and worksheets are perfect for your little kindergarteners! In the game your students must fill their wheelbarrows with 10 valentines. Students take turns spinning the spinner and adding and subtracting valentines from their wheelbarrows. The winner is the first person to fill his/her wheelbarrow with 10 valentines. In one worksheet, students look at the number shown and draw that many valentines in the box. (Numbers 1-10) The other worksheet is a color by number activity, one for boys and one for girls!

Included in this packet is a colored game board, a game board without the background, and lastly, the black and white version. Playing pieces are colored or b & w, as well. This product is perfect for a math center or small group activity! The worksheets allow students to work independently, as well. It is aligned with the Common Core Standards for kindergarten. You can feel confident that your students are not only working towards the standard, but having fun as well! I mean, what kindergartener doesn’t love games, drawing and coloring?!

Cookie Ten Frames - Making Sums of 10 COMMON CORE Aligned

Well, I hope everyone survived parent-teacher conferences! Being that I am just subbing, I don’t have to worry about those just yet (phew!). So, while I had some extra time this week, I made another resource! I think it’s fair to say I am addicted to making teaching resources! Here is my next one! It is called “Cookie Ten Frames – Making Sums of 10”. I love how this one came out! This packet starts off by introducing a girl named Emily who is baking cookies for the bake sale at her school. (Yea, I guess I didn’t have to throw the story aspect of it in there, but it makes it more fun!) Anyways, Emily needs help putting ten cookies on each of her cookie sheets. Your students help Emily by completing 3 different worksheets in which they work with ten frames and make sums of 10. At the end, I made cookie themed ten frames that can be used for the “Ten Frame Slapjack” game. This game was so much fun for my student teaching students! I even love it myself! It's Bowling Time!

In 1st grade math, my students were learning about fact families of 10. For the lesson, we used empty bottles and tennis balls to set up our own bowling alley in the middle of our room. Early in the week, I sent home a letter to the families asking for them to send in any empty plastic bottles. The families were more than helpful and we ended up with more bottles than you could imagine. (We recycled the extras!) Overall, the activity was very successful and the students had a blast!

Me: "How many pins did you knock down?"

Student: "I knocked down 5!"

Me: "How did you know so quickly?"

Student: "Because, there are 5 pins still up and I know 5 + 5 = 10!"

Woohoo! He got it! Number sense, number sense, number sense!!!

3, 2, 1, BLASTOFF!!!

          Over the past few weeks, I have been teaching all about outer space. While the children have loved all the lessons in the unit, this astronaut lesson was definitely their favorite! Here is a picture of me in the astronaut suit that I made myself! I bought a paint suit from Home Depot and attached spray-painted shaving caps and NASA pictures. For the space pack, I rolled up an old roof rack luggage cover and used the attached straps to wear it. The helmet was an old motorcycle helmet that I simply spray-painted and added letter stickers.

         For the lesson, I introduced all the parts of the astronaut suit and taught the children all about the life of an astronaut in space. Of course, the burning question on all the students’ minds was about how astronauts go to the bathroom in space. Oh boy, did they think that was funny!

         Next, it was time to live like astronauts. Everyone got to taste a piece of freeze dried ice cream. (FYI: For a total of 41 students, 5 bags were plenty for each student to have a taste!) We used adjectives such as, hard, creamy, smooth, and chocolaty to describe the ice cream’s taste, texture, and smell. Then, as a class, we took a vote whether we liked freeze dried or regular ice cream better. We organized our information on a graph like the one pictured here. The winner was regular ice cream. It won by 2 votes!

 

 

 

 

         The following day, the students kept asking more about astronauts. I decided, being that the class just learned about how to write a letter, it would be appropriate and exciting for the children to write letters to an astronaut. So, we did! Here are a couple examples.
